This has to be one of the toughest things to master in photoshop, but I am going to give you some simple tips which will give you a head start.

Ok like I already said there is no easy solution when it comes to selecting hair, it’s hard and it will take a lot time for you to master this. Never try to select hair by hand this is complete madness. You should try this approach, and that is to use features that distinguish the hair from its background, this is normally the brightness or colour to create a mask.

Creating a mask usually means making more than one copy of the hair image you are trying to alter. Ok start by chopping out everything except the difficult fringe area and some of the face, you will find you cane always copy these parts later using the tools within photoshop like “simpler selection”. Another great tip is to exaggerate the differences in colour or brightness using the “appropriate tool”, You could use the “hue saturation and bring the red tones out”.

Checking the channel palette is another great tip, this gives you a better contrast, I personal like to use the blue channel, but I’ve know people to use anything. Some times you can get lucky here and find you have enough detail to work with. If not then the hard work begins, split the hair into different sections and work whichever feature is the strongest in each one.

You should now copy and paste each selected area of hair into a new file. Now you can paste the hair together in your new file section by section, and when this is done use the simple “lasso tool” selection to copy in the face. Like I said this is hard work and very hard to master.
